Hitachi * HP

Category One

In Category One, "Companies that are developing equipment, products or systems with elements or components that help conserve and protect the environment," Hitachi won first place.

Hitachi participated with its Adaptable Modular Storage and Workgroup Modular Storage Midrange storage products based on the ecological solutions initiative that is helping increase energy efficiency in data equipment, optimize refrigeration and re-use resources. In March 2007, 1012 products out of 5491 were certified as green products, increasing Hitachi's sales by 83%.

Hitachi seeks to promote activities for meeting the goals of its Environmental Vision 2025 plan. Between 2000 and 2005 its projects achieved a reduction of 120,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Calculations for domestic operations indicate that by 2015 it will reduce its carbon footprint to 7 million tons of CO2 and slash carbon emissions by 100 million tons worldwide by 2025.

Categories Two and Three

And in Category Two, "Companies that are applying programs for managing and re-using technological waste," the award went to HP.

HP, Hewlett-Packard Mexico, presented its Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policy initiative for consideration, a policy it is implementing from inside the company. Sustainable environmental responsibility, energy efficiency, innovation in materials and recycling-oriented design are the priorities of the initiative.

With this initiative it has succeeded in reducing total operational use by 1%, or the equivalent of 35 million kWhrs, and avoiding 18 tons of CO2. By 2010 HP aims to reduce the combined energy use of its operations and products by 20%.

By 2010 HP also aims to reduce the use of energy, including a 50% improvement in the energy efficiency of its high-volume servers and a 30% improvement in the energy efficiency of its family of high-volume printers.

HP also promotes and implements its Planet Partner Program dedicated to collecting and recycling used cartridges. Its initiative to save and recycle water, which after being processed is re-used in restrooms or in watering the greenspaces of HP office buildings, since 1997 has achieved a savings of 17,361.50 m3, 57% of the total amount drawn (275,068.00 m3) for a reuse of 157,579.00 m3.

HP's Santa Fe office features a smart system that regulates the various services it provides, achieving a total savings of $87,205.50. Likewise, for every ton of paper collected by HP at its facilities, 20 trees are saved, also contributing toward saving energy and water. The average amount of paper and cardboard collected in 2007 was 79,335 kg.

It is worth noting that HP is donating paper to the Comisión de Libros de Texto Gratuito (Free Textbooks Commission).

Within Category Three of the Greem Comm Award, dedicated to companies that are participating in environmental initiatives, the Advisory Council recognized HP for its various eco-minded programs.

HP, in conjunction with SEMARNAT and Banamex, created the Fideicomiso para la Preservación de la Tortuga Marina (Trust for the Preservation of Sea Turtles), which is in charge of administering, supporting, and implementing various concrete projects such as:

  • The Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga (Mexican Sea Turtle Center), which carries out research projects and promotes the breeding of all species of sea turtles in Mexico;

  • The Campamento Tortugero de la Escobilla (Escobilla Beach Turtle Camp), located in the state of Oaxaca, where more than 7,000 Gulf turtles lay their eggs, the most important area for this species in the world;

  • The Signage Program to create warning signs for protected areas on beaches;

  • Sponsorship and cooperation with Movimiento Azteca, a Televisión Azteca initiative that raised more than 15 million pesos for the care and preservation of this endangered species;

  • Supporting the conservation and preservation of Mexico's forests.

HP also donated high-tech equipment to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Thanks to HP's contribution, the WWF has been able to create and print maps of various Mexican forests, providing knowledge of the exact location of communities, protected areas, borders for forest preserves, road networks, and areas of economic development.

With the help of large-capacity, high-performance HP computers enabled for the processing of satellite images, HP promoted forest growth and conservation, thus benefiting thousands of people in the communities of La Sierra Tarahumara (Durango), Mariposa Monarca (Michoacán), Sierra Norte (Chiapas, Veracruz and Hidalgo), Sierra Costera (Chiapas), Selva Zoque (Chiapas, Veracruz and Oaxaca), Península de Yucatán (Quintana Roo and Tabasco) and Bosques de Oaxaca (Sierra Norte, Sierra costera and Selva Zoque).
